Jonathan Jones

With a mother who is Chairman of the Sherborne Branch of the Liberal Democrats, politics is obviously discussed fairly regularly in the Jones’ household, but having been knocked off his bike in Yetminster by a speeding motorist, Jonathan decided it was time he personally took action for the good of the community.

Having reached 18 in October 2006, Jonathan is looking forward to his first election where he can actually cast his vote, and play an active part in the election process himself. He believes that it is important for young voters to get into the habit of voting from the outset, and to encourage this, they need somebody to whom they can relate, who understands their needs and is prepared to speak out on their behalf.

Jonathan started school at St Andrew’s VC Primary School, Yetminster, before becoming a Chorister at Wells Cathedral. He then spent six years as a Boarder, rising to Deputy Head Chorister, with concert tours to France, Canada & the USA, live broadcasts for radio & television, performing for the Archbishop of Canterbury and HM The Queen during her Golden Jubilee tour, numerous CD recordings and, with his brother & 4 other Choristers plus the men from Wells Cathedral Choir, recording the soundtrack for the film “To Kill A King”.

After his voice gravitated southwards, he took his Key Stage 3 SATs and then GCSEs at the Gryphon School, Sherborne, and is presently studying for A levels in Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Music, Accountancy and Economics at Richard Huish College, Taunton. He has been a member of the National Academy of Talented and Gifted Youth based at Warwick University since Year 9. Although he is officially learning the French Horn, he also plays the Viola, Piano and Guitar for personal pleasure.

As one of the youngest qualified football referees in the country, Jonathan can often be found at the Recreation Ground in Yetminster or further afield working for the Yeovil & District and Perry Street Leagues.

Jonathan Jones is the youngest member of the Sherborne Branch; when he stands for the Queen Thorne Ward in the District Council elections on 3rd May, he will be just 18 years 6 months and 24 days old. Is this the youngest candidate in the country?

Jonathan is particularly keen to address the environmental issues which are outlined in the “Green Taxes” LibDem Policy Document. Although he does drive, he tries to use public transport whenever possible and is acutely aware of related problems faced by rural communities. If you have an issue which you would like to raise with Jonathan or another member of the Liberal Democrat team, please contact him on 01935 873472.
